Easley Winery: Longest-running family-owned Hoosier winery, right in the heart of downtown Indy!
Sample some of the oldest, most popular Indiana-made wines and get an amazing free guided tour of a 33-year-old wine maker right in the heart of downtown Indianapolis by visiting Easley Winery, just six blocks east of Monument Circle.
This veteran producer of 24 award-winning wines, from Cabernet Sauvignon to Reggae Red – likely the winery’s most popular vintage – hosts the public every week of the year on its tours on Saturdays and Sundays at Noon, and they’re not to be missed. Most of the two dozen or so wines are available for free tastings after the tour in the tasting room, and the people couldn’t be nicer.
Opened in 1974, Easley Winery is the longest continuously operating family-owned winery in the state of Indiana. The thought of starting such a winery by Jack and Joan Easley, in the basement of their home in Indianapolis, was at first stunted by the fact that in Indiana in the 1960s, it was illegal to make wine! So the initial Easley Winery was located in southern Michigan.
Ultimately, the state law was changed, and in 1974, Jack and Joan purchased the former Fertig Ice Cream factory in downtown Indianapolis and completed their first grape crush.
Today the winery is operated by Mark and Meredith Easley and a group of a dozen employees. Among the most popular Easley spirits is not just Reggae Red, but also Indiana Champagne. Prices start as low as $4.96 and cap at a maximum of $24.75 per bottle, with the occasional exception of a deluxe vintage. The winery’s banquet room seats up to 70 and is available for event rentals for just a few bucks per person. Just go to the Easley Winery web site for additional details, including the most up to date list of wines.
