Indianapolis City Market: The heartbeat of Indy in the heart of downtown

Apr 28, 2010

From fresh produce to ethnic dishes, from the Farmers’ Market to fresh flowers, kitchen demonstrations to fitness classes, the Indianapolis City Market is a hub of activity and has been since it was established in 1821.

Set on the east side of downtown, this thriving urban area was created to showcase Indiana food products and the professionals that work in the food industry. The Indianapolis City Market is a non-profit organization that continues to stimulate the city's economy. A vibrant downtown event destination, the market is also home to many summer activities.

Inside the market area, locals can peruse a selection of vendors and restaurants including The Good Stuff, a natural products store specializing in nutritional supplements and healthy groceries. Cafe Olivia is located on the east wing, and is a restaurant bringing a small piece of Provence, France to the Indianapolis City Market. The Ameer Middle Eastern Cuisine restaurant commits to creating tasty but healthy Middle Eastern food with menu items such as stuffed grape leaves and Spanakopita. You can even visit Jack’s Barbershop, a classic 1920s barbershop that offers you a haircut, shave, or neck and shoulder massage.

The Indianapolis City Market also offers a selection of cuisine classes with their popular Demonstration Kitchen. Here, classes are offered twice a day with top local chefs to teach you a range of food subjects including nutrition, working with a budget or how to stock your pantry.

Beginning in May, the Wednesday and Saturday Farmers’ Market hosts approximately 50 Indiana producers selling meats, eggs, cheese, poultry, honey, plants, fresh-cut flowers, baked goods, street foods, and many more products. This event runs through October and is Indy’s original Farmers’ Market.

The Indianapolis City Market is a place to socialize, purchase fresh local produce while enjoying the hustle and bustle of a downtown marketplace.

HelloIndianapolis Tip: Zumba classes are held during certain evenings. Check website for details.
