Stutz Business Center: From painters to filmmakers, sculptors to designers

Jun 1, 2010

An oft-overlooked artistic venue just north of downtown, the Stutz building is like a chaotic hive of expressive creativity.  Housing some 80 artists, sculptors, photographers, designers, architects and craftspeople, the Stutz is steeped in history and is a fascinating place to visit at any time of the year.

As the name might suggest, the building originated from the days of Harry Stutz, the founder of the Stutz Motorcar Company. Stutz is perhaps best remembered for the Bearcat, which raced in the very first Indianapolis 500 event in 1911. The Stutz factory set up its initial headquarters at the current location from 1911 to 1919.

The Stutz building is now owned by commercial developer Turner Woodard, who refurbished the factory complex and turned it into a center for small and mid-sized businesses. However, visitors can still view an amazing collection of vintage Stutz cars within the building, a collection maintained by Woodard and that includes a 1914 Bearcat, 1926 Speedster Straight 8 and a 1928 Blackhawk Landspeed.

The Stutz Artists Association, the largest association of working artists in Indiana, creates and displays its pieces within the building, and works hard to promote its member artists via sponsorship of events throughout the year. "First Friday" is a monthly event at the Stutz where visitors can mingle with the artists and peruse an eclectic variety of artwork. The artists' studios are open from noon to 5 pm on the first Friday of every month.

Perhaps the biggest annual event to be held is the Stutz Artists Open House. During the month of April, more than 70 artists open up their studios during this two-day open house, where visitors can peruse and purchase artwork and enjoy musical performances and food. Admission is just $12 for one day.

Also within the building, is the StutzArtSpace, a nonprofit visual art center where art classes and workshops of all mediums are taught by Stutz artists.

HelloMetro Tip: During normal office hours, visit the fully licensed Bearcats Restaurant for a bite to eat. The restaurant is situated on the ground floor.
