Big Dog Fat Cat Festival: America’s Next Top Adoptable Animal show

Jun 21, 2010

Ever watched the pampered pooches at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and thought, “My Sadie could do that!"? Or maybe you bare more than a striking resemblance to your cat? If that’s the case, then get off the sofa and head down to the Big Dog Fat Cat Festival on Saturday, August 14, from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. at Perry Park on Indy’s south side.

Of course, you don’t have to bring a pet to enjoy this family-friendly festival. Organized by Indianapolis’ Southside Animal Shelter (yes, it’s also located on the south side of Indy), the event promises to be a fun day of high drama, “Tyra style” with mischief and mayhem assured. Headlining the festival is the Adopted Pet Show, where for ten dollars, owners can enter their adored adoptees into categories like the Swimsuit Competition, Look a Like (Owner & Pet), Best Costume/Outfit, Best Sports Fan, and the coveted, Best in Show. With a fantastic first prize of a Pampered Pooches Getaway Weekend from BestFriends, plus numerous other prizes, this is sure to be a memorable photo opportunity.

For those that like a friendly Corn Hole Tournament, you can try your luck with a “Swish” or a “Slider” to grab the grand first prize - a one night stay at the Columbia Club with breakfast, a carriage ride, and dinner downtown included. Deadline for Corn Hole Tournament registration is August 8 and amateur rules apply.

Admission is free to the Big Dog Fat Cat Festival. Food and drinks are available, plus there are children's games, a silent auction and music from the Ol’ Skool Classic Rock and Blues Band.

Proceeds from the event will help to fund the Southside Animal Shelter. Owner and founder, Rosie Ellis and her team tirelessly devote their time and care to manage a no-kill shelter for adoptable cats and dogs. This non-profit organization provides a safe haven for 175 cats and 25 dogs, all waiting for loving new homes. The shelter survives mainly through private donations and adoptions.

HelloMetro Tip: Visit their website for competition details. Animal viewing and adoption times for the shelter are also online.
