Broad Ripple Park: Explore the Circle City’s ‘Canine Companion Zone’

Jun 27, 2010

There aren’t too many places in the heart of the Hoosier capital where you can let your trusted canine friend roam carefree. But Broad Ripple Park provides just that, with a secure and enclosed stretch of grass to let Rover off the lead and run around to his heart’s content.

One of only three Indy Parks to be considered a “Bark Park,” or “Canine Companion Zone,” this is Indy’s premier spot for you and your dog to freely run into some new friends. And that’s not all the Park has to offer.

This 61-acre facility borders the White River and is an extremely popular resource for Indianapolis residents. The facilities at Broad Ripple Park are extensive, offering tennis courts, a baseball diamond, multi-use athletic fields, a playground, picnic shelters and areas, a viewing platform overlooking the White River, and a wooded area that includes a fitness path.

The Park also offers a wide variety of programs and activities. The Family Center within the grounds holds classes all year round in a variety of subjects for children and adults. (Click here for the current schedule of classes.)  Please note that registration is typically required for many of these events.

During the summer months, you might want to take the kids to the seasonal 8-lane, 25-meter swimming pool which comes complete with deck chairs and umbrellas. This pool was the location of the Olympic swimming tryouts in 1924 and 1952.

Seeing an estimated 150,000 visitors through its gates, Broad Ripple Park has played a major role within the Indianapolis community for decades. Originally established during the 1890s in Broad Ripple Village, the area became a popular place for boating and swimming, and was once the home of a 1920s amusement park carousel. In 1945, the Board of Parks Commission of Indianapolis bought the area, and the park relocated to its current location.

HelloIndianapolis Tip:  “Pooch Passes” are valid all year round ($75) and include a gate access device and a tag for your dog.
