NCAA Hall of Champions celebrates college sports
Published: May 13, 2009
Nearly two years after an electrical fire badly damaged the facility, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Hall of Champions has opened with updated galleries and an interactive sports play area, and a new mission.
Located within the White River State Park on the grounds of NCAA national headquarters, the Hall of Champions is now a welcoming facility for both individual visitors and corporate groups looking for a distinctive place to meet in the Indy capital.
A new Great Hall and Kick-Off Theater greet visitors upon arrival. The theater features great NCAA sports moments on the walls, as well as a high-definition widescreen film that tells the story of American collegiate sports.
An "Arena area" highlights each of the NCAA’s 23 championship sports with graphics, artifacts and memorabilia. NCAA championship banners fill the back walls of this 4,200-square-foot section, the largest display gallery in the building.
To fulfill its new mission to welcome corporate groups, the hall features hospitality and meeting spaces designed to fit meetings of 75 to 100 people. However, the newest and most interesting space is the 4,000-square-foot Play area, which features a multitude of new and captivating interactive hands-on sports simulators.
Visitors can bat a baseball, smack a tennis ball at 100-plus miles per hour, lift a rowing scull, throw a baseball, take a shot from a free-throw line, and try their skill on the downhill-skiing simulator.
A new NCAA Hall of Honor in the round celebrates the academic and sports achievements of college and university students and notes specific honors and awards over the years. And a new gift shop offers sports memorabilia from most of the nation's NCAA-accredited schools
Admission to the facility is $5 for adults and $3 for ages 55 and over and children 6-18.
