Lazy Daze Coffee Shop: “Best of” Bohemian ambiance in historic Irvington
Tucked away in a small corner of a storied building in Indianapolis’s historic Irvington neighborhood, Lazy Daze Coffee House has racked up an impressive list of “best of” awards in its brief five-year history in the Circle City.
Chosen "Best Coffee House" by Nuvo magazine in 2009, and with a nice variety of coffees, lattes, mochas and teas, among other drinks, Lazy Daze offers far more than just a wide variety of beverages. Owner Jeff Coppinger and his staff work hard to provide a premium beverage in a clearly non-corporate environment. But what’s just as significant is the atmosphere and experience inside the shop itself.
When visitors enter Lazy Daze, they penetrate a “bohemian, New Orleanish” atmosphere, Coppinger says. Lazy Daze shows its commitment to the community by displaying original works from local artists in and around Irvington. Poetry, music and comedy often fill the primary back room, while the front section tends to be the place for small talk. Outside seating during warmer weather offers a pleasurable environment on a deck shaded by a large tulip tree.
Lazy Daze coffees are 40% socially and environmentally conscious, meaning that they range from fair trade, organic and rainforest alliance to bird friendly. The remaining coffee products are single origin, or estate coffees, that are imported directly from the coffee plantations. Bright Eyes drinks will definitely keep you awake at all hours, while Breve’ drinks are among the smoothest of the coffees from the Americas.
The espresso has a slight sweetness due to a lightly roasted bean called a Café Bella, which gives beverage drinkers a smooth tasting latte, cappuccino, or any other espresso-based drink. Lazy Daze also carries a premium selection of organic loose-leaf teas, in addition to several black, green, and herbal teas. Oolong and white teas are available for connoisseurs.
HelloIndianapolis tip: check the coffee shop's web site thoroughly if you want to visit the shop when good music or poetry, or even stand-up comedy, is offered.
