Dorman Street Saloon: A delightful Cottage Home bar with decades of history

Jul 12, 2010

The Dorman Street Saloon oozes nostalgia and individuality. Possessing the only pool table left in Indianapolis where you can play a game for just 25 cents, a drinks menu as long as your arm, plus a purported visitor of legendary status, then if this doesn’t wet your whistle, the simple charm of the place will.

Part of the Cottage Home neighborhood, a near Eastside historic district, the Saloon was known as The Mahogany Bar (or the Hog) from the end of Prohibition until the early ‘80s. Legend has it that John Dillinger frequented the Saloon around 1933 when he robbed the State Bank on Massachusetts Avenue, picking up a cool $25,000. With the Saloon being only two blocks away from his target, Dillinger is believed to have spent weeks casing the joint from here.

Wanting to preserve its entire history, the original bar names remain on the outside of the building, while the interior maintains its charm with dark wooden paneling on the walls, and a Rookwood tile bar that may have once originated from the Old Greyhound Bus Station.

The Dorman Street Saloon serves up a beer and cocktail menu that surpasses many others. Hoosier microbrews include Upland Wheat, Upland Dragonfly IPA, and Dirty Helen Brown Ale, while rare global imports include the UK’s Boddington’s, Sheaf’s Stout from Australia, and Pilsner Urquell, a crisp and light Czech lager. Their Vodka list includes the full Absolut range, pure malt whiskeys like Glenmorangie and Glenlivet, plus an extensive list of specialty liquors and cordials.

If you love music, you are sure to find something to please in their jukebox with an explosion of jazz, dance, hip-hop, alternative and pure rock tunes. When you’ve made your selection, try your hand at darts for a while or chill out in front of a large screen TV.

HelloIndianapolisTip: The current owners are investing in a brand new kitchen with a view to serving food, due to open late summer 2010.
