Birdy’s Bar and Grill: Nostalgia, beers and bar food

Jul 18, 2010

It’s always worth keeping an eye on the music listings for Birdy's Bar and Grill, one of Indianapolis’s most loved live music venues. Where else would you find rising local artists sharing a stage with international acts like British Grammy-nominated and Ivor Novello Award winner, K.T. Tunstall – and always at a very affordable ticket price?

The location of Birdy’s does nothing to help its cause, inconspicuously nestled on N. Keystone Avenue with very little else to draw a crowd. However, with a supreme sound system that keeps the music raw and very “rock ‘n roll,” that doesn’t seem to be an issue, with the venue drawing regular gig goers on a weekly basis.

The main performance area is large enough to hold a few hundred people without feeling like an empty shell during the smaller gigs. They add a nice nostalgic touch to the place with posters of all past performing artists adorning the walls.

The main bar also shares this space with a pool room in the back. For a birds-eye view of the stage, head upstairs to an open dining room and an additional bar. The venue also offers darts and free WiFi with additional seating in the outside beer garden.

Birdy’s has a good selection of beers and bar food, like wings, burgers, pizza, tacos, and even breakfast until 4pm, but it is the music that drives folks to this harmony haven.

With a phenomenal lighting rig to set any performance alight, Birdy’s does it bit for the local music scene, hosting the biggest annual battle of the bands called “Battle of Birdy’s.” With a regular “Songwriters Café Roots” night, this venue plays host to a diverse range of music from acoustic folk to heavy rock.

HelloIndianapolis Tip: To enter all shows at Birdy’s, you must be at least 21 years of age. Check their website for current gig listings. Private parties and large groups are catered for.
