Komodo dragons visit the Indianapolis Zoo

Published: May 5, 2009

Modern-day dragons exist — and they're on their way to the Indianapolis Zoo starting May 23.

The Dragons of Komodo exhibit, presented by Citizens Energy Group, will feature two of the reptiles on loan from the Denver Zoo through Labor Day weekend.

Komodo dragons, which can grow up to 10 feet long, are the largest lizards on the planet. They are the top predator on their island habitat of Komodo in Central Indonesia, and the species is often known to hunt prey many times its own weight, including native buffalo.

The lizards ambush unsuspecting meals from a hidden spot, bite their prey, and follow it until it succumbs to toxic bacteria.

It may take days to bring down a buffalo, and many dragons then share in the feast. — though they may also turn on one another for an occasional same-species meal.

Zoological preservation sites throughout the United States are attempting to protect this species through development of captive breeding programs, fund raising and technical support.
