Bynum's Steakhouse: Best on the south side -- and the best dessert in Indy!
Consistently voted one of the best steak houses in Indianapolis and most definitely the best steak house on the south side, Bynum’s is a generational phenomenon that attracts consistent loyalty from the racing world elite and most definitely the local yokels.
Locally owned and operated for more than two decades, with a herd of cattle statues in front, you most certainly can’t miss it. And it’s on South Meridian Street, so if you’re anywhere near the Circle, all you have to do is drive straight south! Somehow this restaurant has become a favorite among drivers and execs from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, so especially during the warmer months, don’t be surprised to see some famous racing faces.
Bynum’s has a definitive rustic feel to it, with wooden fencing on the outside, a partial gravel parking lot and a country western-like feel on the inside. A unique aspect of the dining room is the quotes by various historical figures painted along the ceiling's horizontal beams.
The restaurant’s signature entrée is the 32-ounce Prime Rib, which at $25.95 compares very favorably to the $40-plus prices for similar steaks at other noted Indy restaurants, such as St. Elmo’s ($42.95). There is also a wide variety of other corn-fed beef. Consider a side of garlic and vermouth-smothered mushrooms to complement the entrée.
For seafood fans, there’s primo sweet cold water lobster from Madagascar, but if you’re on a one-track mind for it, check to make sure lobster is available before you head to the restaurant. It runs out quickly some nights.
No Bynum’s meal should ever end without one of owner Ritchie Curry’s award-winning desserts – and there are plenty from which to choose: Bynum’s Praline Brownie, Homemade Cheesecake, Banana Foster Bites, or for those who are True Chocoholics, the Chocolate Suicide – rated by more than one local magazine as the best restaurant dessert in the entire city!
The restaurant says reservations are suggested, but on most Fridays and Saturdays, they really are mandatory. It simply doesn’t hurt to plan in advance. Unlike many other steak houses, Bynum's menu and prices are laid out in full on their web site. For those trying to find a restaurant close to the IMAX theater at Southern Plaza Shopping Center, it couldn't be closer.
