Patties of Jamaica: Indianapolis natives know their Patties!
Enter this elfin-sized Patties of Jamaica restaurant about 15 minutes northeast of downtown Indianapolis and you will find father and son, Stefan and Henry Seung, cooking and serving up traditional Jamaican fare, as they have done for 30 years.
Like many small restaurants tucked away in obscure strip malls, these guys rely on regular customers and word of mouth to keep their business open. But don’t be fooled – visit during the lunch hour and you will witness a steady stream of regular customers.
Granted, the menu at Patties is limited, with only a dozen items listed, but it is worth a visit for their specialty dish alone, the Jamaican Beef Pattie. Encased in a flaky pastry crust, this lightly spiced (or regular if you prefer) treat is packed with ground beef, onion and garlic. Such is its popularity that the owners keep a large supply of freshly made Patties in the freezer for those who want to buy in bulk. And at only $1.15 a Pattie, many customers do just that.
Also featured on the menu is Beef Stew with Butter Beans, Baked Chicken, Curried Chicken and even Curried Goat Stew, all freshly made. They also feature their hard dough, fresh bread and sweet, heavy bread with raisins.
Not really recognized for its ambience, Patties is a place to grab and go. Although there are a couple of table and chairs for those who want to stay, it’s far better to take away and enjoy. For those in a hurry, there is plenty of parking out at the front with no fear of getting mowed down during the lunchtime rush.
HelloIndianapolis Tip: Order your Baked or Curried Chicken dish before noon to avoid lunchtime disappointment.
