Kabob Korner: Shish! What a kabob restaurant!

What Kabob Korner lacks in comfort, it more than makes up for it with mouth-watering Middle Eastern dishes and friendliness of the staff. The spicy aroma hits your palette as soon as you step inside the door, and don’t be surprised if Nasir Ayoubi, the owner of the East 82nd Street restaurant welcomes you. He may even invite you into his kitchen!

Originating from Kabul, Afghanistan, Ayoubi once owned the Kabul restaurant on 86th and Ditch before retiring from the business. Ayoubi soon realized retirement was not for him, so he opened the Kabob Corner about three years ago.

Although located on the east side of the Castleton Mall on the north side of Indianapolis, the prices are very reasonable. But be warned - there are no frills here and the menu is certainly compact and bijou.

Of course, the main attraction is the kabobs! You have a choice of marinated beef, chicken or lamb which is then broiled on a skewer and served with pita bread and basmati rice. The Chicken and Lamb Kabob comes highly recommended by Ayoubi himself, who maintains that these two dishes along with the Manto keep the customers coming back. Manto are steamed dumplings filled with seasoned ground turkey and sauteed onions, topped with yoghurt sauce and served with basmati rice.

Another entree choice that’s sure to please is the Kurma Chalow, a mound of basmati rice layered with your choice of chicken or lamb, cooked with a tomato and onion sauce. The vegetarian special offers basmati rice served with vegetables.

Side orders include Sambosa – baked thin layers of pastry filled with seasoned ground turkey and onions. Alternatively, try the house favorite, Aush. This soup consists of vegetables, beans and noodles topped with yogurt sauce.

To finish your meal, why not sample the baklava, a sweet treat of fillo dough layers, walnuts and honey. One bite into this crunchy pastry and the sweet nectar will fill your senses.

HelloIndianapolis Tip: For large carry-out orders, call ahead. The full menu is on the restaurant’s web site.
