Canal Bistro Mediterranean Grille: Middle Eastern cuisine in the middle of Broad Ripple
The décor of the Canal Bistro Mediterranean Grille in the Broad Ripple District, just north of downtown Indianapolis, is originally from Egypt and is pure eye-candy for those interior designers among you. Murals, marble tiles, pillars and richly colored velvet drapes feature highly in the dining area.
However, the real selling point of this Broad Ripple restaurant is most certainly the location. Conveniently nestled against the canal and next to the Monon Trail, it’s a perfect stop-off for a quick lunch, or a romantic evening dinner for two.
While the staff can talk you through the menu, you might want to sample a little of everything. In that case, order the Mazza Plate as your appetizer, a gargantuan spread including Falafel, Feta cheese, olives and Spanakopita -- a crispy pastry stuffed with spinach. This platter was accompanied with bowls of Tabouli (finely chopped parsley, mint, tomato, spring onion and spices) and Hummus (mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice and garlic.)
Among the entrees, the Chicken Shawarma came highly recommended by the staff. A soft wrap is packed full with tender pieces of chicken breast, tomato, parsley, onion, tahini and spices. Also served with fries, this dish is a tangy and colorful option on the menu. Other choices include meat or veggie Gyros, Kababs, Falafel, Baba Ganoush and Pita bread.
For those who have room for dessert, choices include a Grilled Fruit platter, Baklava and Tiramisu. Try one of the many lagers and ales from the Mediterranean too. In the warmer months, partake of a fine feast on the outdoor patio and simply watch the world go by.
HelloIndianapolis Tip: For a twist, top your fries with garlic and crumbled feta cheese. These alone are worth a visit!
