Elbow Room: Quench your thirst at this historic watering hole

May 30, 2010

Visiting the Elbow Room just on the northern outskirts of downtown Indianapolis just feels just like slipping into a comfy pair of slippers -- warm, cozy and familiar. Built in 1893 and located in the historic St. Joseph’s neighborhood, this bar and deli became the Elbow Room in 1933 just after the prohibition had ended.

The flat-iron building has two very different downstairs rooms. The smaller room features a smattering of tables and a fully stocked bar, where you can still pick up a quick snack. The restaurant is the focal point of the building, with dark paneling, large windows and comfortable seating.

If sports viewing is your thing, then watch the many TVs that are dotted around the area to catch up on your favorite sports event. If you prefer, you can venture upstairs to the bar and game room, which also features pool tables and good views of the city.

Whatever you are in the mood for, the Elbow Room can certainly deliver. Visitors who are looking for good beer and bites may wish to sample the “Elbow 'Tizers” section of the menu, offering everything from Jumbo Pretzels to Smokestack Wings.

If you want something a little heartier, then the half-pound burgers are always a good choice - fresh, hand formed, char-grilled and served with anything and everything you could possibly want. Build your own if you prefer with the “Downtown Burger” or go for something a little out of the ordinary with the Bison Burger. Get fishy with the Elbow Room's Blue Crab Cakes served crunchy and golden brown.

From draft beers like Bass and Guinness to local ales like Upland Wheat, the Elbow Room can certainly quench your thirst and tickle your fancy. If you want the place all to yourself, you can hire the upstairs Park View Banquet Room, which offers stunning panoramic views of downtown Indy.

HelloMetro Tip: Drink specials are offered every day at the Elbow Room from Soco and Lime to domestic pitchers. Ask your server for details or click here before visiting. And click here to join the "EClub," which gives you the opportunity to learn about special offers via e-mail, not to mention a special annual birthday gift!
