Yats Cajun/Creole: Louisiana's best for hotdog prices

Published: Mar 18, 2009

Forget the $5 footlongs for lunch! Indianapolis diners with a craving for spicy fare can’t miss Yats for quality Cajun and Creole dining.

With Indianapolis locations now on Massachusetts Avenue in the heart of downtown Indy, Broad Ripple (near north), 96th Street on the north side and Greenwood on the south side, the restaurant chain founded by owner and longtime Louisianan Joe Vuskovich has quickly made its mark on the low-cost dining scene — and among a surprisingly diverse set of consumer constituencies.

It’s obvious from Joe’s many years of experience in running two similar restaurants in New Orleans and the original Yats (now closed) in Lexington, Ky., that he’s worked hard here in Indianapolis to make both the atmosphere and cuisine New Orleans authentic.

A recent New York Times review called Yats "a celebration of neo-psychedelic paintings, great music and excellent food.”

The entrée list is simple but elegant, and never more than $6.50. From the Chicken Maque Choux (pronounced “mock shoe”) to the Hunters Stew, the preparation always seems first rate, as does the helpful and consistently courteous staff.

For those with an inclination toward the truly traditional Cajun, the popular Chili Cheese Etoufee with Crawfish is not to be missed. The only problem? Making sure you’re there on time for lunch and dinner when there’s some left!

Hours are extensive, especially during on Friday and Saturday nights. Early Sunday afternoons are a great time for  a relaxing first-time visit,  including a lively conversation with Joe.
