Rene’s Bakery: The proof is in the pudding…or pastry.

Jun 28, 2010

This place cruelly bursts with sweet temptation, all skillfully designed to test your willpower to resist carbs with an illogically high glycemic index. But Rene’s Bakery certainly fills an important niche here in Indianapolis. Growing his business since 2004, owner and founder, Mr. Rene Trevino, thankfully possessed the vision and foresight to introduce the delights of European baking to a grateful city.

Make no mistake – Rene’s Bakery is THE bakery in these parts. The only problem you might face is finding it. Located on a side street of the near-north ‘hood of Broad Ripple, you should stumble upon what looks like an unassuming shed or garage next to a local Mexican restaurant. Simply follow the unmistakable smell of freshly baked goodies to the little blue building, and prepare to be overwhelmed with olfactory seduction.

Baking good bread is an art, and they certainly know that at Rene’s. Whether you’re hankering for brioche, multigrain or crusty baguettes, the bread always remains moist and spongy. With a tantalizing selection of scones, croissants, cookies, muffins, tarts and tortes, there is something here for everyone. Rene’s Chocolate Mousse Torte is a luscious, rich cake made with a minimum of flour and a maximum of chocolate flakes. The coconut, chocolate and strawberry tarts are always a popular choice, while the truffles and éclairs bring certain savoir-faire to the menu.

Remember that the early bird catches the worm (or walnut croissant), so avoid disappointment and go early enough to grab your favorite. Menu items are subject to change.

HelloIndianapolis Tip: Rene’s Bakery currently offers limited seating outside only, but there's hope! Look for their new location opening downtown. "Café Rene" will open at 50 South Meridian Street later in 2010. In addition, you can find them every Saturday from 8 am to 12:30 pm at the Broad Ripple Farmer’s Market or Wednesdays at the Indianapolis downtown City Market between 10 am and 1:30 pm.
