Moe & Johnny'sTake an evening drive through Indy’s Broad Ripple district from April through October or thereabouts, and while you’re tooling up North College, glance over at Moe & Johnny’s. You can't miss it. First, it's got a central roof that looks a bit like an observatory. Second, it's a sure bet that you wont see too many empty tables outside – just a friendly gathering of people enjoying warm evenings and cold beer on a large, sheltered patio. Even during thunderstorms, this covered area is a great spot to watch people frantically dashing for cover. The entrance into Moe’s presents you with two choices. Turn left into the vast bar area, complete with TV screens, pool tables and a raised level for casual dining. Be warned – while the atmosphere is extraordinarily affable, the bar can get busy on weekend nights. For a more peaceful experience, turn to the right for the charming family dining room. Showcasing high ceilings, hand-painted murals and a visible open-flamed stone oven kitchen, this provides a pleasing and quieter alternative. Moe & Johnny’s serves strictly Americana gastronomy with salads, sandwiches, burgers and pizza highlighting the menu. But what they do here, they do very well, so if you crave a thick hand-pattied burger cooked to perfection, check out their burger menu. Your quarter or half-pounder is grilled over an open flame and served with lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickles on a toasted sesame seed bun. Highly recommended comes the Blue Burger, smothered in melted, creamy blue cheese and packed with flavor. When it comes to pizzas, the Red Greek is hard to beat, frilled up with its sun-dried tomato tapenade, with artichoke hearts, red onion, red pepper, black olives and feta cheese. A truly mountainous favorite is the Mount St. Helen’s Baked Pasta, and it can’t be better described than what’s on the menu: “This ziti style pasta is smothered with both with our house marinara and mozzarella. Then we pour it over penne pasta and sausage and bake it in over fired brick oven.” It adds, with an obvious spelling error at the end, “Then we serve it bubbling and steaming like the mountain of fame.” (sic) Oh well, nobody’s perfect.
