Jeff Bedel's Bio
I'm certain it's unusual to become an artist at age 31 but fortunately with some misfortunes and determination the niche that had eluded me was found in front of the stage of the Indianapolis music scene.
I was always enamored by musicians,so much I had many attempts to become one myself to no avail. In trying to find myself of being more of a fan by being a contributor to the "scene" I made attempts to write. My first few attempts were welcomed but just happened to be accompanied by a photographer. I hit a stumbling block when my first review was rejected for lack of photographs. I'm was so put off that I sold my guitar for a digital camera. I never wrote another piece.
I always had enjoyed taking pictures as a kid, but it was very frustrating when you spent $10 on film and processing and all you had was a bunch of horrible snapshots. $10 was a lot of money when your age 12 and I just figured it wasn't my thing. Wanting be an artist never seemed like an option for I couldn't draw, paint, nor sculpt either. It's strange how you become something you never dreamt of being.
My goal at first to create a photo directory of the local bands so I was very prolific and never missed an opportunity to catch a performance. This helped perfect my skill and it soon led to boredom so I tried different lighting and angles as opposed of getting a great full color shot. The experimenting, patience, and the nerve to not let the crowd behind me distract me, but instead feed off the energy of the musicians.
Each show I just kept outdoing myself in the rawness and power of my photos. Some say I catch the ecstacy of the moments which define the show that a great writer could never describe in words. I think a small part of me are in those photos living out my rock n roll dream.
